Winter Adventures at Shetek!

On New Year's Day 💥 we enjoyed a beautiful afternoon of skiing and snowshoeing out at Shetek Lutheran Ministries!

A family on their way into the Shetek woods!

It was a perfect afternoon for it--temperatures in the 30's, partly cloudy, and great snow here at camp. Families came dressed appropriately for the weather and activities, and ready for adventure. There's something to be said about getting outdoors on New Year's Day and going exploring, trying something new. What a way to begin a new year! There were a few folks who hadn't ever been snowshoeing or skiing before! We're grateful to be able to provide those experiences here at Shetek--with a pair of skis or snowshoes and a few minutes of instruction, you can be on your way to new adventures.

The boots might be big, but he didn't care!

Shetek currently has 25 pairs of snowshoes, mainly for ages ten and up, and around 75 pairs of skis for the same age range. We had a few little ones who were bound and determined to get going in a pair of skis and boy did they ever go--even if the boots were a couple sizes bigger than they should have been! One of my program goals is to continue to build our gear inventory to include skis and snowshoes for the very little. Starting with adventures early leads to innumerable health benefits later in life, and we would love to provide the gear and instruction to create those moments for children here at Shetek!

Fireside treats and rosy cheeks after playing in the snow!

Children who spend time (at least two hours every day!) in the outdoors playing, exploring, discovering, adventuring, climbing, hiking, digging, and any other verb you can imagine enjoy better physical, emotional, and mental health. They become more self-confident, self-aware, and have a heightened self-esteem. Families also see tremendous benefit in outdoor adventure, growing stronger together as a team and learning more about each other along the way! Parents can set a good example for their children by trying new things themselves, thus encouraging resiliency and empowering kids to do the same.

Shetek Lutheran Ministries is set apart as an outdoor ministry facility in many ways. We offer extraordinary environmental education and outdoor recreation programming for all generations, on 27 acres of wooded ground right on the shores of Lake Shetek. Our resources are vast--meals, lodging, gear rental, teaching kits, live animals, and so much more. Please stay tuned to our blog, Facebook page (just search for Shetek Environmental Learning Center), and website (www.shetek.org) for more ways your family can join us here at camp for adventures throughout the year! Do you have big goals for your family's health and wellness for 2020? Let Shetek's Environmental Education program help you with your new discoveries together!
